What A Moving Day
By know, most of you have heard that Virginia was struck by an earthquake today. The original main quake came in as a magnitude 5.8 on the Richter scale. Accoding to the United States Geological Survey, this is the largest earthguake east of the Rookies in over 114 years. Since the initial earthquake, which happened around 1:51:04 PM (EDT), there have been 3 USGS recorded aftershocks in the following sizes: 2.8 and 2.2. There will surely be more aftershock to be reported soon. You can check out the USGS earthquake map for this event here.
While, yes this website is gear more towards storm spotters and chaser (oh by the way, there is a hurricane coming on top of all this), we would like to keep our members in the loop on what else is going on. If you are interested, we have setup a donation page to help raise fund to be used for various efforts during this time, including helping other amateur radio operators that may need a hand. With this earthquake and the pending hurricane, its going to be busy. You can make your donation by click here or on the button to the right. As always, donations are 100% Tax Deductible.
If you have any photos or videos that you may have taken of this event, please feel free to either post them in the forum or get them to use and we will include them on the site. Maybe they can be the first images in our soon to be released photo gallery.
According to reports, tremors were felt as far south as Atlanta, Georgia; north as Quebec City, Quebec; west as Illinois, and east as Fredericton, New Brunswick with damage reported as far away as Burlington, New Jersey. While earthquakes are more common in California and Alaska, the happen more often in other locations of the US, but usually on a much smaller range on the Richter Scale, that most people don't know about them. If you go to the USGS website, you can see recent earthquakes, not only in the US but around the world, for upto the last week. You can also search there site for information on earthquakes beyond that point. Just for example, according to USGS records, the last record earthquake for Texas (as of 8-23-2011) took place on 8-7-2011, which had a magnitude of 2.6, located just 14 miles West/North West of Dallas at a depth of about 3 miles. Take a minute, look to see when the last earthqauke hit near where you live. Don't think they get close to you, check again. Oklahoma was struck by 2 earthquakes recently. They happend on the following dates, 8-18-2011 (3.0) and 8-22-2011 (2.5).
Please take a moment and remember those that are affected by this event. Say a little pray, if you want, but lets keep them in our thoughts. Take a moment and help support our donation efforts. Again all donations are 100% tax deductible.
